Beating a drum with strength, emotion and solidarity in ceremonial dances, this deep spiritual tradition has played an inherent role in the lives of Northwest Coast Natives for millennia. Now often displayed as a work of original art, or to be used in musical expression. Each drum is individually handmade, thus the heart beat and “voice” are uniquely distinctive. The raven “steals the sun” symbol on this drum tells the interracial part of the creation story.
Handmade and painted moose hide drum by Tlingit artist Nick Vonda.
